Переглядів 3216 місяців тому
Replacing an electric rack and pinion can be a costly, and sometimes, unavailable option! Before you do, determine if a belt replacement is an option and save $$$'s on the repair bill over a full replacement. BONUS: this doesn't even require a reflash of the PCM, and can be done with simple hand tools!

    Why not just jack up the front end and have the wheels off the ground instead of removing tie-rods ?

    Here is a warning about how a new Edelmann steering rack did NOT fit into the mounts on my 2003 Toyota Avalon. I ordered it from RockAuto (great price). While trying to install it yesterday, the left side had to be forced downward into the mount bracket using a strap wrench before the bolt would go through. That's unacceptably tight, but at least we got the bolt in. Not sure how we could have pulled it downward without a big strap wrench. Then, the right side would not go downward into the right mount bracket at all. The rack's right mount is definitely too wide. Also, while looking at it from the right side, it was visually obvious that the right mount on the rack wasn't constructed correctly. The rack's mount is two folds of sheet steel that are supposed to fit together to form a flat surface that goes down into the vehicle's mount. One half is up and one half is down, so the folds don't meet at all (as it does perfectly on the original rack). That is a big manufacturing flaw that QA apparently didn't catch. As soon as I saw that, we stopped because we knew it will come back out and get returned. I don't think I want to risk getting another one of the same brand since I really need to get my daily driver back on the road ASAP. I'll be calling them this morning after they open to see what they say.

      What was their response?

    • @BradMosch_engineer
      @BradMosch_engineer 8 місяців тому

      @@DBLOCK150 I called Edelmann directly. After I sent a picture by email, they sent a replacement out right away along with a shipping label to send the other one back. I was impressed with their response until I opened the box with the replacement, because it had the exact same problem! The right mount bracket was deformed in exactly the same way. Not sure why they didn't check it before sending it out considering I sent a very clear photo of the problem. So, after another call we decided I should return the one they just sent me to RockAuto. The next day I called my local Toyota dealer, and they could order me a rebuilt unit with a warranty for a bit over $600. I did that, and it of course fit and worked perfectly. I had also ordered all the replacement power steering hoses from RockAuto and replaced all those at the same time. Also, while everything was apart, I replaced the front and rear engine mounts and both right and left control arms due to rubber deterioration. As long as the right CV was out (to replace the rear motor mount), I replaced the seal in the transaxle, and then decided to pull the left shaft and do the same on the left side. It's been working perfectly since I got it all back together. The maintenance tasks on a vehicle with 270k miles on it can snowball a bit, but this Avalon is running so well and are known to last many more miles than mine has, so I think it was well worth the time, effort and money to do what I did on it. I would love a Tesla, but just can't justify the expense, yet. It was either fix my old car, or bite the bullet and get a Model 3 to drive for (hopefully) the majority of the rest of my life (I'm in my 60's). I keep any vehicle I've ever owned for very long periods of time while maintaining them myself.

    Short and to the point, love it. I agree with gun at end but hey, I'm sure it's be better on same gun. I do wonder if these would have helped my 1/2 baddie from HD break my VW axle nut free.... I had to ask for help with someone on brakes and my breaker bar that's like 18"....sad 1200 with 90psi did nothing...

    DO NOT BUY EDELMAN POWER STEERING LINES, we always have issues with these products from a mechanics perspective, They are never bent properly, sometimes we can make it work, sometimes we cant, and sometimes the job turns into a disaster that I'm embarrassed to attach my name to, one of our suppliers (parts source) will not accept them as defective, they just put them back on the shelf to resell to someone else.
